One Room Challenge – Week 1

Hello, everyone!

We can’t believe it’s already time for this new One Room Challenge! For those of you who are not familiar with the One Room Challenge, it is the brain-child of the wonderful Linda at Calling It Home; the goal is to complete a room in 6 weeks, with a weekly blog update. Not only is this a great motivator to staying on schedule, but we love seeing all the other projects. The ORC is basically 6 weeks of design inspiration, in a very supportive community. We love it, and we’re so happy we get to be a part of it again!

ORC

This time around, we are doing a kitchen. It may seem crazy to renovate a kitchen in 6 weeks, but we love the challenge. We did a kitchen/dining room two ORCs ago (you can check it out here), and we think we’re better prepared this time around. Because the timing is so tight, we’ve already done demolition and ordered the cabinets. We’ve also moved a door that leads to the backyard. Those things can take a while, and last year we learned that it’s better to have some extra time in case something goes wrong. So here are some pictures of what the kitchen looked like initially:

And here is what it looks like now:

As you guys can see, we decided to open up a wall and create a larger space. We’ll be going over the floor plans next week, but we’re so excited with the potential for this room.

Our awesome, wonderful clients wanted the kitchen to be an open, bright space with lots of storage, an extra seating area on top of the island, and a place for a TV. We love that by opening up that wall, we have the space to give them all of this without making this space feel cramped. Here are some inspiration pictures that show what kind of kitchen we’re going for:

We have so many ideas for this kitchen, and we’re so happy we get to do a One Room Challenge with this project!!! We know at some point over the next few weeks we’re going to go crazy and look back and think how insane it was to do a kitchen ORC, but as of right now, we’re thrilled!

We can’t wait to see the amazing projects all other ORC participants are working on! Make sure to check out the featured designers, as well as the guest participants for some amazing design 🙂

London Winter 2016

Happy New Year!!!!
Hope you all have had a fabulous holiday season and are all off to a great start in
2016!!
Last year was a very busy year at Rajni Alex Design. After a non-stop work period of nearly eleven months, I was very happy to turn off my emails and get away to London to spend much need family time with my kids, hubby, and also meet my sister and her family. London has always been a favorite of mine; it has so much to offer to everyone. And London during winter is even prettier with all the Christmas decorations. Because I was visiting London with family, I divided our activities in different interest groups: London for kids, London for grown ups, and of course, London for Design aficionados.
London for kids: I have a six year old girl who loves tea parties and fairies (which I
am totally down with), and a nine year old son who wants to know everything about
Egyptian and Greek Mythology, and loves to explain the Theory of Relativity to anyone who will listen (which is so not me).To make the most of our time there, my husband and I each took one kid to something they would particularly like, as well as visit other kid friendly places. One day, we tried taking the kids to the London Eye, but the long lines and the rain made it impossible to wait in the long queue- so instead we went to Sea Life London Aquarium.
Londres_SEA-LIFE-London-Aquarium
It was really special because Santa came to feed the sea creatures, which made my daughter very happy. This is a great indoor Aquarium with great displays for the kids and adults alike. I definitely recommend this for a rainy day activity with the kids when visiting London 🙂
London Sea Santa
British Museum- As I said earlier my son is a huge fan of Egyptian Mythology – so my husband took him to the British Museum to see the Egyptian Exhibit, which he loved! He especially liked the Rosetta Stone.

Alice in Wonderland Mad Hatter afternoon tea at the Sanderson Hotel – This was
so much fun for my daughter. Afternoon tea is an English tradition, and there are many great hotels who do themed afternoon tea for the children. She loved it, and so did I!

Winter Wonderland in Hyde park- This one is an absolute must when visiting London in the winter time. The whole park lights up and looks so beautiful, that you have to see it to believe it. All the kids had a great time- there are rides for big kids and small kids, a circus, ice skating rinks, a Christmas market… it’s just great!

London for grown ups:  We did not spend all our time doing kids stuff. We grown ups went to some really great restaurants. There are literally hundreds to choose from, but we ended up choosing Sushi Samba because of the view it promised, as well as the amazing food.

We also met with some friends in a typical English Pub in Kensignton called Britannia, which was so cozy and homey, I almost wanted to sit in front of the fireplace and read a book.

London for the design aficionados: I really wanted to go to the famed London Design center in Chelsea, but unfortunately they were closed for the holidays. However, I got to go to the fabulous Ham Yard Hotel designed by Kit Kemp, and it truly is a feast for the eyes and the soul. While the afternoon tea at the Ham Yard was delicious, I was equally delighted by the décor of the hotel.

While in London I also got to go to one of my favorite design stores. It’s called India Jane, and it was beautifully decorated for Christmas. I was like a little girl in a candy store!!!

London was fun, but I’m looking forward to going back to work! Hope you all enjoyed the pictures!!

New Year’s Wish

Hello, everyone!

We here at Rajni Alex Design want to wish you a happy New Year!

HNYE

In the words of Neil Gaiman:

I hope you will have a wonderful year, that you’ll dream dangerously and outrageously, that you’ll make something that didn’t exist before you made it, that you will be loved and that you will be liked, and that you will have people to love and to like in return. And, most importantly (because I think there should be more kindness and more wisdom in the world right now), that you will, when you need to be, be wise, and that you will always be kind.

Happy 2016!

Travel Tips

Hello, everyone!

Christmas is a week away, and if you are like us, you want to spend it with family or friends. The thing is, for many of us, our family and friends don’t live nearby. Which means either we have to travel to see them, or they have to travel to see us. Some of us here at Rajni Alex Design are traveling abroad to be with family (expect a London post early in January!), some of us are hosting family, but anyways, there’s going to be a lot of traveling going on. And while we love the fact that travel allows us to be with our loved ones and to see different places, the actual travel from one place to the other is not usually the most comfortable experience.

Whether it’s by plane, train, or car, traveling means long periods of time in a confined space. So here are some items to make your journey more fun, comfortable, and easy:

Slide1

Slide2

  1. A passport holder like this classy one that can be found on One Kings Lane – So you can keep your passport, boarding pass, etc. organized.
  2. A nice, warm scarf like this one from Nordstrom – Because planes and trains are pretty chilly.
  3. Osis+ Dust It – To make your hair look nice after a long time traveling.
  4. E-reader – Because long periods of time where you can barely move can get pretty boring .
  5. A bag to hold all your cords like this one – so you can find any charger easily.
  6. Deck of cards – Very useful when traveling with children or in groups.
  7. Travel flats like these beautiful Tory Burch Minnie Flats – because you want to be comfortable.
  8. Rosebud Salve – For cracked lips…  Also great for hands.
  9. Bags to keep your luggage organized – so you can find what you need when you need it.
  10. Travel hair brush – So you can look presentable when arriving at your destination.
  11. A nice weekender bag like this Michael Kors – great for shorter trips.
  12. Socks – If you’re traveling in flats or open shoes, don’t forget to have some socks in your carry-on. Traveling is much more comfortable when your feet aren’t freezing.
  13. Travel Mini Manicure Kit – Because who’s never chipped a nail when dragging luggage around. Make sure to have this in your checked luggage.

We’re sure there are many items we could add to this list, but we tried to stick to the essentials. Don’t forget to always keep valuables in your carry-on luggage, as well as electronics; also make sure you have a change of clothes in case your luggage is misplaced. And remember to not get too stressed; traveling can be awkward at times, but it is absolutely worth it!

Well, we have to go pack now, but we’ll be back here soon. In the meantime, you can follow us on Facebook and Instagram.

Gift Wrapping Ideas

Hello, everyone!

We here at Rajni Alex Design hope you are all doing well, and having a great week. We are super excited!! Why? Because Christmas is 15 days away!!!!! So very soon, we’ll be having a wonderful time with our loved ones!

Some of us will be traveling to meet family, and so we’re getting everything ready now, and there’s one task that we have to accomplish soon: gift-wrapping. Whether you love it or hate it, it is an important Christmas ritual. Why? Because it shows your loved ones that not only you put some thought into picking a gift for them, you also took the time to wrap it in a way that looks beautiful. It is a sign of attention to your loved ones. To receive a gift wrapped like this…

wrapmainnice

Is much nicer than to receive a gift like this…

Wrapping a gift beautifully is not very complicated, but technique matters, so here are a couple of youtube tutorials that you may find useful:

First, here’s a link to a basic gift wrapping tutorial.

Now, if you’re a bit craftier, here’s a tutorial to a japanese gift wrap.

You’ll obviously need some wrapping paper, so here are a few great Christmasy options:

These are also many options of ribbons and bows out there. Wrapping presents doesn’t have to be a chore: have fun with it! And remember that you’re doing it because it will make the person receiving the gift feel special 🙂
